Oliver Mahon - Bradfield College - Head of Grounds
Oliver Mahon is Head of Grounds at Bradfield College, overseeing the management and maintenance of a 300-acre estate that includes extensive sports facilities, cricket squares, football pitches, lacrosse fields, athletics tracks, and two full-sized artificial hockey pitches. Oliver began his journey in horticulture and sports turf from a young age, earning Level 2 and Level 3 horticulture qualifications before completing a sports turf apprenticeship at Monkton Combe School. Over six years, he progressed to Senior Groundsperson and subsequently Grounds and Gardens Manager, leading a team of eight, including three apprentices, on a 120-acre estate.
Throughout his career, Oliver has emphasized mentorship and professional development, giving young people their first opportunities in sports turf and grounds management. His work extends beyond day-to-day operations, having contributed to match day ground teams at leading stadiums, including Twickenham, Ashton Gate, The Rec in Bath, and major cricket venues such as Somerset and Gloucestershire Cricket Clubs. Oliver has recently joined the GMA NextGen Board, actively promoting the industry, supporting the next generation of grounds professionals, and serving as a role model for best practices and career development.
Oliver has made significant contributions to both his company and the wider grounds management industry by sharing his extensive knowledge and experience. He has showcased the achievements of his teams in school communities, through social media, and via professional networks. He has developed strong industry connections, enabling him to bring his teams to professional stadiums to observe elite practices and incorporate lessons learned into the maintenance of school facilities, enhancing pitch quality and staff development.
Among his key achievements, Oliver has successfully transitioned from initial practical experience to senior leadership roles, consistently delivering high-quality sports surfaces while fostering a culture of learning and innovation. He has overcome challenges including gaining hands-on expertise quickly, building industry networks, and managing large, complex estates with varied sporting requirements. His proactive approach to mentorship and knowledge sharing has strengthened both his teams and the facilities under his care.
Looking forward, Oliver aims to increase public awareness of the scope and importance of grounds management, highlighting the work involved in preparing pitches and maintaining high standards. He plans to expand his educational outreach via social media and a future grounds-focused podcast, connecting professionals from all levels of the industry, from local volunteers to top-tier stadium staff, to share experiences, insights, and stories. Through these initiatives, he seeks to inspire and support the next generation of grounds professionals, ensuring the continued growth, sustainability, and recognition of the profession.
I know Ollie well, he has been part of my match day staff for the last two years at the Allianz Stadium Twickenham. He is very diligent in his role, always done what was asked of him. Beside his great work ethic, he is a big part of the team on a social side too. He is a key role in the recruitment of young ground persons into the industry, whether it’s via the GMA or on social media platforms. He has done very well in his personal career, as a young Head Groundperson at Bradfield College and taking on the responsibilities on an 300 acre site and 5 staff at a young age."
