Max Drummond-Smillie - Fargro Ltd - Head of Amenity
With over a decade of experience in the landscape and sports turf industries across the UK and Middle East, Max Drummond-Smillie now leads the Amenity division at Fargro Ltd. Appointed as Head of Amenity in December 2023, he established the division as a dedicated part of the wider horticultural business.
From the outset, Max built the division around three principles: education, innovation and environmental responsibility. Starting with minimal resources and a small cross-functional team, he quickly helped Fargro Amenity gain a foothold in a competitive market. Rather than simply supplying products, Max positioned the division as a partner to its customers, delivering tailored advisory services and data-led maintenance plans to support sites ranging from grassroots clubs to elite stadiums.
A major focus has been developing a comprehensive, sustainability-led product portfolio. Max introduced a curated range of biostimulants, soil conditioners and organic-based solutions to align with modern Integrated Turf Management (ITM) practices. Within 18 months, he secured multiple UK-exclusive product partnerships, whilst also strengthening ties with existing suppliers to align on long-term sustainability goals. In autumn 2024, he launched Fargro Amenity’s own-brand fertiliser line, designed to provide professional-standard performance at an accessible price point for grassroots facilities.
His efforts have also extended to training and internal capability building. Max has developed technical training for Fargro’s sales staff, ensuring consistent expertise across the team, and he actively represents the division at industry trade shows and seminars. He was instrumental in securing Fargro’s membership with key industry bodies, including the Grounds Management Association.
Launching a new division in a competitive sector came with challenges, but Max’s focus on value-added services and strategic partnerships has helped Fargro Amenity grow rapidly. The successful publication of the company’s first amenity brochure and sports turf pamphlet in 2024 marked a significant milestone.
Looking ahead, Max is determined to continue driving sustainable change in the industry. He plans to establish regional demonstrations, build stronger networks and showcase the opportunities within grounds management to young people considering their career path.
Max has quietly and confidently made a real impact since joining Fargro. He’s taken on the challenge of building the Amenity division from the ground up and has done so with focus, integrity, and a clear commitment to sustainable turf management. Rather than chasing quick wins, Max has built trust with customers by offering practical advice, tailored support, and by consistently delivering on his promises. He approaches his work with thoughtfulness and care, always looking for ways to improve things—not just for the business, but for the wider industry. Whether it's launching new products, supporting grassroots facilities, or sharing knowledge at events, Max brings a steady hand, a clear head and a long-term perspective. His contribution has helped to begin to establish Fargro Amenity as a trusted name in a competitive field, and his work continues to make an important difference."
