Maritza Martinez - St. Louis CITY SC - Associate Director of Stadium Grounds
Maritza Martinez is the Associate Director of Stadium Grounds for St. Louis CITY SC, overseeing one of Major League Soccer’s premier hybrid Bermudagrass pitches. Her expertise spans advanced turf technologies, performance testing, large-scale landscape management, and preparation for international matches. Beyond her technical accomplishments, Maritza is a passionate advocate for diversity, equity, and environmental sustainability within the sports turf industry. She is a founding member of CITY SC’s DEIB and Green Team committees and serves on multiple national committees within the Sports Field Management Association, helping shape a more inclusive and forward-thinking future for grounds professionals.
At St. Louis CITY SC, Maritza has contributed by delivering world-class playing conditions through data-driven turf management and the integration of cutting-edge technologies, including SGL grow lights and comprehensive field-testing systems aligned with FIFA standards. She played a pivotal role in the construction of the stadium and training grounds and developed a hands-on internship program to mentor and support emerging talent. Her efforts have helped raise the standard of field operations while providing opportunities for the next generation of turf professionals.
Maritza’s achievements are particularly significant given the challenges she has faced as the only woman currently holding an Associate Director position in Major League Soccer. As a queer woman of color in a predominantly male field, she has navigated visible and subtle barriers, from being underestimated to working in environments where she was often the only person with her identity. These experiences have strengthened her resolve, strategic thinking, and commitment to mentorship.
Her key accomplishments include maintaining the hybrid Bermudagrass pitch to elite international standards, integrating advanced turf technologies, and leading the development of inclusive training programs. She has also actively advocated for systemic improvements in industry diversity, equity, and sustainability through committee involvement, conference presentations, and professional networking.
Looking forward, Maritza aims to advance sustainable turf practices, including efficient irrigation, soil health management, and environmentally conscious technologies. She seeks to expand access and representation in the industry by mentoring underrepresented professionals and creating structured pathways for career development. Her vision combines technical excellence, innovation, and social impact, aiming to cultivate an industry that is high-performing, environmentally responsible, and inclusive for all.
Through her leadership, advocacy, and commitment to excellence, Maritza Martinez continues to set a standard for both professional turf management and meaningful industry transformation.
Maritza represents the very best of the next generation of leaders in the sports field management profession. In a high-pressure, high-visibility environment, she consistently delivers elite-level playing conditions that meet the demands of Major League Soccer while advancing industry best practices. Her technical knowledge, attention to detail, and commitment to excellence are matched only by her leadership and drive to elevate those around her. As a member of the Sports Field Management Association, Maritza is not only an accomplished practitioner but a dedicated contributor to the growth of our profession. She actively engages in continuing education, mentorship, and innovation—setting a powerful example for peers and young professionals alike. Her integrity, professionalism, and passion for the craft make her an outstanding ambassador for the industry.
