Ben Tuckwell - Nuture Group - Grounds Maintenance Operative

Ben Tuckwell is an ambitious and dedicated grounds management professional at the beginning of a promising career, combining a passion for transforming outdoor spaces with a commitment to community wellbeing and sustainability. As the first Apprentice ever taken on by his company, Ben has quickly grown into a trusted and dependable team member, supported by colleagues and managers as he completes his Horticulture Apprenticeship. His journey exemplifies the value of apprenticeships in opening pathways for young professionals to thrive in the grounds industry.

Ben began his career after completing an NVQ Level 2 in Construction, choosing to pursue his interest in grounds maintenance. In less than a year, he has mastered a wide range of groundskeeping tasks, adapted to professional environments, and earned leadership responsibilities. One of his proudest achievements is leading on line-marking community sports fields, an area of work that has become his primary responsibility. As a former footballer, Ben understands the importance of well-prepared pitches, not just for gameplay but for the wellbeing of young people and the sense of belonging that sport creates. What started as a learning opportunity has evolved into a role where he now works independently, boosting his confidence and reinforcing his reputation as a dependable, capable professional.

This rapid progression has been achieved while navigating the challenges of being the first Apprentice within the company, with no precedent to follow. Ben has embraced this responsibility, undertaking training such as Health & Safety certifications and proving that young people can add real value when given the opportunity. His success has not only benefited his company, allowing the team to focus on other priorities while he leads on key responsibilities, but also serves as a model for the wider industry, highlighting the benefits of investing in apprenticeships.

Looking to the future, Ben is passionate about shaping a more sustainable and eco-conscious approach to grounds management. His vision includes introducing pollinator-friendly environments, reducing waste through composting, conserving water with drought-tolerant planting, and promoting biodiversity by prioritising native species. He is also committed to reducing reliance on chemical pesticides and herbicides, instead encouraging natural alternatives.

With a strong work ethic, eagerness to learn, and commitment to innovation, Ben is determined to be a role model for other young professionals entering the industry. His goal is clear: to help create green spaces that are sustainable, resilient, and inspiring places where communities can connect, thrive, and take pride in their surroundings.

Ben has been a breath of fresh air since he started, he always goes above and beyond with every task we have set him and he is a massive credit to the team and to Nurture. I can really see Ben progressing in Nurture if he keeps this attitude in his work. Thank you for everything you do Ben keep up the great work."
