Aaron Stevenson - London Stadium - Deputy Head Groundsperson
Aaron Stevenson is a highly driven sports turf professional. At just 24 years old, Aaron has already held senior roles at some of the most prestigious venues in British sport, from elite golf courses in Scotland to the English Premier League. His rapid rise, is inspiring a new generation of young professionals to pursue careers in the sports turf industry.
Aaron began his career with a greenkeeping apprenticeship at Irvine Golf Club, where he spent four years developing his skills and building a foundation in turf care. Eager to broaden his horizons, he took a leap into football by joining Rangers Football Club. There, he thrived under the mentorship of David Roxburgh and his team, gaining exceptional technical knowledge, life skills, and memories, including playing a role in preparing the pitch as Rangers reached the Europa League final.
Ambitious to experience the demands of the English Premier League, Aaron moved to London, working first at Tottenham Hotspur under Darren Baldwin and Nick Phillips. He then progressed to the London Stadium, where his talent and work ethic quickly earned him promotion from Skilled Grounds Person to Deputy Head Grounds Person under James Williams. In this role, he contributed to the stadium’s recognition as Grounds Team of the Year, a testament to the high standards he and his team achieved while supporting multi-use events including football, baseball, and athletics.
Aaron’s journey has not been without challenges. Leaving his family in Scotland to start a new life in London required courage and resilience, while managing a stammer has demanded persistence and self-belief. Stepping into management has helped him build confidence, improve his communication, and develop into a supportive leader who mentors junior staff and encourages them to grow into established grounds professionals.
Beyond his club role, Aaron uses platforms like LinkedIn to connect with and support other young grounds staff, offering advice, encouragement, and insights into setting goals and building successful careers. His future vision is to see more young people enter and celebrate the sports turf industry, particularly in Scotland, where he hopes to act as a role model for others looking to follow similar ambitions into the Premier League and beyond.
Aaron has been the outstanding performer within the team. He has worked exceedingly hard and led by example. by doing this he has also been promoted to deputy head in a joint role with Bailee. With many other things Aaron has taken over the community pitch along with taking on paper work by doing this he has widened his knowledge in data collection and has given himself experience in managing a pitch and people."
