I have been a Rugby person since I was 6 years old, around 12 years ago I decided to volunteer and give back to my club. My journey as a groundsman began, when I saw the vacancy advertised for RPA Rugby London & SE, I fancied it and the rest is history.
WHAT’S THE MOST REWARDING PART OF BEING AN RPA IN YOUR REGION?
Understanding the volunteer’s journey, giving them reassurance and help along the way.
FAVOURITE SPORT? WHO’S YOUR TEAM?
Rugby, unfortunately my Team Wasps no long exist. Internationally I pay specific attention the results of the Hong Kong RFU. As I had the privilege of playing for them when stationed their with the Army.
CAN YOU SHARE A STANDOUT PROJECT OR PITCH YOU’VE WORKED ON AND WHY IT WAS MEMORABLE?
I have done pre match and match day staff at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham. The HOME of Rugby, my world.
WHAT’S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU ALWAYS GIVE TO GROUNDS TEAMS?
Keep up the good work. Even when you don’t feel appreciated.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER IN GROUNDS MANAGEMENT?
The love of both Rugby & Pitch Maintenance.
WHO’S BEEN A MAJOR INFLUENCE OR MENTOR IN YOUR CAREER?
He’ll hate me for saying this – Simon Jonhson. He was my RPA for Reading RFC, gave me help and encouragement when and where needed.
WHAT’S ONE SKILL EVERY GOOD GROUNDSPERSON SHOULD HAVE?
Tenacity – desire to succeed.
IF YOU WEREN’T WORKING IN TURF, WHAT CAREER COULD YOU SEE YOURSELF IN?
I’d still be an Electrician.
