GMA Honours Iestyn John And Brad Jefferies With Pioneer Marks

24 July 2025

News Story

We have recognised the contributions of two former GMA NextGen members, Iestyn John and Brad Jefferies, by awarding them their official Pioneer Marks as part of the Pioneer Legacy initiative.

Launched at SALTEX last year, the Pioneer Legacy is a recognition scheme dedicated to celebrating the contributions of both past and present members of GMA NextGen (formerly known as the GMA Young Board).

At the heart of the initiative is the Pioneer Mark - a distinctive legacy number presented to each NextGen member, recognising their lasting impact on the grounds management industry.

Iestyn and Brad have now been formally awarded their marks, #006 and #029 respectively.

Iestyn John (#006), who works for Peter Villars Sportsground Maintenance and the GMA as a Regional Pitch Advisor for Cricket in Wales, was part of the original Young Board cohort in 2011, alongside the likes of John Ledwidge (#001), Ryan Golding (#004) and Niall Hazlehurst (#005). He represented the group until 2018, helping to shape its early vision and direction.

Reflecting on the recognition, Iestyn said: “It’s great to be recognised through this new initiative. I really valued my time as part of the very first Young Board cohort, and it’s fantastic to see the group still thriving and driving forward with industry-changing initiatives that make a real difference.”

Brad Jefferies (#029), now Head Groundsman at Colchester United FC, served on the board for six years, including one as Chair. Over his career, he has worked at New Road, Edgbaston County Cricket, Kidderminster Harriers and Lincoln City FC.

“I’m grateful to the GMA for the Pioneer Mark,” Brad said. “I was on the group for six years and it’s great to see the new GMA NextGen members driving forward with initiatives like the Schools into Stadia events, which are really excelling.”

The Pioneer Legacy initiative will continue to highlight the vital role of grounds professionals who champion the industry.

Jennifer Carter, Director of Communications & Marketing at the GMA, added: “The Pioneer Legacy is all about celebrating the people who have shaped the journey of GMA NextGen and continue to inspire the next wave of talent. Iestyn and Brad have made a real difference to our industry, so it’s a pleasure to recognise their contribution in such a meaningful way.”
