News Story

The Grounds Management Association (GMA) is saddened to learn of the passing of Len Smith, GMA Life Member and a stalwart of our industry.

Len made a lasting impression on everyone who had the pleasure of working with him, and he will be greatly missed across the grounds management community.

His impact on sport in Wales, particularly cricket, is immeasurable. A proud Welshman, Len began life as a greenkeeper at Radyr Golf Club before going on to care for grounds at Pennylan Bowling and Lawn Tennis Club, the Polytechnic of Wales (now the University of South Wales), Cardiff Athletic Club and Cardiff City.

In 1980, he became Glamorgan County Cricket Club’s first full-time groundsman, a role he held for over 20 years. His knowledge helped shape the club’s facilities, including during the year it hosted an Ashes Test and when Len was named Turf Professional of the Year in 2006.

Len was at the heart of everything to do with the advancement of grounds management. As a valued driver of the Wales branch of the then IOG, he had an ability to put people at ease as well as hold them to account but always to improve opportunities for the profession.

Len’s influence extended well beyond the boundary ropes. His love for education and mentoring led him to joining the GMA as the first Regional Pitch Advisor for the Southwest and Wales in 2009, where he was instrumental in helping launch what became the Pitch Advisory Service.

He built strong relationships with local authorities, colleges and governing bodies and, most importantly, inspired a new generation of grounds staff.

In 2014, Len’s contribution was recognised with the GMA’s Lifetime Achievement Award at our annual Industry Awards.

Len was known by colleagues for his GMA Wales merchandise and his late-night conversations at gatherings. He brought people together, made them feel valued and left them better for having known him.

GMA’s Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Webb, said: “Len was a pioneer and a passionate advocate for cricket and for grounds management across all levels. He brought humour and wisdom to everything he did. The GMA, and the industry, are better because of him and the foundations he laid. We are proud to have had Len as part of our story, and he will be remembered with deep respect.”

Our thoughts are with Len’s family, friends and the many people whose lives he touched.
