Introduction to Horse Racing Maintenance
What is involved in this online course?
This fully online course is designed for individuals who may not have the time to travel and attend face-to-face training. It provides an introduction to the key tasks involved in maintaining a racecourse safely, effectively, and cost-efficiently.

What does the course cover?
The course consists of three modules designed to provide new knowledge and build on existing experience.
Module 1: Requirements of the Groundsperson and Racecourse
- Key roles on a racecourse (grounds staff, clerks, vets, stewards and others)
- Maintenance activities throughout the season
- Creating and maintaining a safe working environment
Module 2: Maintenance Activities – Equipment and Machinery
- Types of equipment and machinery used on racecourses
- Machinery settings and operational requirements
- Safe use of equipment and machinery
Module 3: Safe Use and Storage of Materials
- Materials commonly used on racecourses
- Different material types and applications
- Impacts of incorrect use and storage
Each module includes an informal knowledge check, followed by a formal online multiple-choice assessment at the end of the course.
Upon completion, we'll also recommend further learning opportunities to support your continued development.
