The role involves the maintenance, upkeep, and remedial work of all sports grounds and landscape areas.

Sports Pitch & Turf Management

  • Maintenance: Mowing, edging, aeration (core/solid tining, slitting), scarification, fertilisation, top-dressing, and overseeding of
    all turf areas (pitches and lawns).
  • Equipment Upkeep: Routine maintenance of all outdoor sports surface equipment (goals, nets, cricket covers, flags, etc.).
  • Chemical/Pest Control: Use of fungicides, herbicides, and pesticides to maintain turf and artificial surfaces, including
    monitoring and treating common issues like leatherjackets and red thread.
  • Irrigation: Adjusting watering schedules based on weather and plant requirements.

Horticulture & Landscaping

  • Planting Schemes: Planting, watering, feeding, and pruning trees, shrubs, and hedges.
  • Maintenance: Maintaining flower beds, planters, and all planting schemes, including seasonal changes.
  • Weed Control: Managing weeds across all soft and hard landscape areas (beds, paths, parking areas).

General Upkeep & Safety

  • Amenity Upkeep: Clearing pathways, driveways, and carparks of litter, leaves, and debris.
  • Facilities: General upkeep of Grounds & Gardens office/canteen spaces, the Pavilion building, and all tool/machinery storage
    structures.
  • Winter Maintenance: Snow removal and ice management (salting/gritting).
  • Driving: Driving the departmental vehicle for collecting materials and equipment.
  • Other Duties: Aiding the Sports Department (e.g., PE kit laundering) and performing minor repairs to fencing, benches, andsignage as required.

Safety, Equipment & Professional Development

  • Health & Safety: Conform to all School Health and Safety policies, complete risk assessments for job-specific tasks, and ensure
    compliance for self and others.
  • Equipment Management:
    Perform routine maintenance and refuelling of all groundskeeping equipment (mowers, trimmers, blowers).
  • Ensure all equipment and materials are used and stored in accordance with policy.
  • Maintain detailed records of chemical applications and equipment service.
  • Report faulty equipment immediately.
  • Offer advice on cost-effectiveness and new equipment/consumables.
  • Development: Willingness to learn new techniques through routine training, toolbox talks, and annual performance reviews.

Expertise/Skill

  • Full clean driving licence.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety legislation.
  • Ability to plan and prioritise work effectively.
  • Good attention to detail and a methodical approach to work.
  • Ability to send emails to suppliers, contractors, and line management.

Desirable Attributes

  • Qualifications: Level 2 sports turf qualification or equivalent skill set.
  • Spraying: PA1 and PA6 spraying qualifications.

Experience

  • Relevant experience and good working knowledge of grounds maintenance, including experience operating a wide range of
    garden machinery.
