The provision of good quality pitches is crucial for all sports played on natural or artificial turf surfaces. The pitch needs to be enjoyable and safe to play on and be available for play except in the most extreme weather conditions. To make this happen, the pitch needs to be effectively maintained throughout the year.

This work is carried out by grounds staff and volunteers who have the skills, in-depth knowledge, and experience, to assess what is required to produce quality surfaces for sports and recreational spaces all year round. This is grounds management. You can find out more about grounds management on the Grounds Management Association website.

Grounds management is sport’s hidden profession - and we want to change that.

With a booming sports sector in the UK and growing demand in the turf care sector for skilled talent, there has never been a better time to get into grounds management.

The role of grounds staff is varied and rewarding, and is critical at all clubs. It gives people who love sport and outdoor activities the opportunity to work in a variety of settings like iconic sports venues, schools and university grounds, parks, and estates, as well as across local community sports facilities.

The role can be extremely fulfilling and rewarding, providing great variety every day, as well as the opportunity to work outdoors as part of a dedicated expert team. With a GMA survey of over three hundred grounds staff and volunteers showing high levels of job satisfaction and fulfilment, with 63% saying they “love” their job, and 90% report being passionate about the sector, anyone looking to work in sport, stay active and feel challenged should get involved grounds management.
